Current expansion plans in Portugal are going ahead with the acquisition of the Penina and Dona Filipa Hotels and their three associated golf courses including the renowned San Lorenzo Course, and under construction is a further luxury hotel development with 54 Hole Championship Golf Course, along with a Five Star Hotel & Spa at Pinheiros Altos due to open in early 2004.
Present investments include majority shareholding in the Kingdom Hotel Investment Group (KHI) which was formed early this year with a capital of $400 million. Through partnerships and leverage (KHI) controls over $1 billion of hotel real estate across the Middle East and Africa. Its portfolio consists primarily of 13 hotels managed by international groups such as Four Seasons and Movenpick.
JJW Hotels & Resorts has a corporate Head Office in London, England; and offices Paris, France; Quinta do Lago, Portugal; Vienna, Austria and Cairo, Egypt.
The Grand Hotel Wien was first opened in 1870 as the first Grand Hotel in Vienna and re-opened in 1994 following a complete re-development, retaining only its historic faade. It now combines classic Viennese style with state-of-the art technology. The five-star-deluxe 205-room hotel enjoys a prime location in the centre of Vienna on Krntner Ring, adjacent to the Ringstrassen Galerien, and a short walk from the Vienna State Opera. Other attractions within the hotel include top class restaurants offering French, Japanese and Viennese cuisine, two bars, five meeting rooms and one of Vienna's largest hotel ballrooms.
Growth in a mature market
JJW is an international Group involved in the acquisition, development and operation of hotels and resorts in prime locations throughout Europe and the Middle East. Established in France and Portugal in the late 1980s, the Group acquired an impressive portfolio of 5 star, 4 star, 3 star and 2 star hotels in this mature market and now owns and operates 75 hotels in Europe and the Middle East.
Operating in two markets
The Group is achieving rapid growth by focusing on two contrasting but complementary market segments. In the mature European market, the offering of 5 star hotels and luxury golfing resorts is being increased through acquisitions and mergers. In the developing Middle Eastern market, growth is achieved through the development and construction of new hotels and resorts.
Expanding the 5 star offering
In the European market, 4 and 5 star hotels have already been acquired in some of the world's most fashionable cities: Cannes, London, Paris and Vienna. The Group also owns Pinheiros Altos, one of the most exclusive and successful 5 star luxury golf and residential resorts in the Algarve, Southern Portugal. As part of JJW's on-going commitment to excellence, a 5 star hotel and spa is due to open in 2003 in the grounds of Pinheiros Altos. Currently under construction in Portugal is a world-class 54 hole championship golf course and luxury hotel development. Recent additions to the golf portfolio include two further 5 star hotels and associated three golf courses.
Active in a developing market
The Group has been active in the Middle East, taking maximum advantage of a dynamic market with lower barriers to entry. Recent investments include a major shareholding in Kingdom Hotel Investment Group (KHI). KHI's portfolio consists primarily of 13 hotels managed by Four Seasons and Mvenpick, amongst others. Adopting this strategy gives the Group access to hotel and resort construction projects throughout Egypt and the Middle East in key cities such as Cairo, Beirut, Tripoli, Damascus and Amman.
Establishing a global platform
By delivering consistent quality across all brands, JJW Hotels & Resorts is becoming a significant force in the hospitality market. To maintain this position and to take advantage of economies of scale and cross-marketing opportunities not available to smaller companies, the Group continues to make considerable investments in management and IT infrastructure.
